2023

Highlights

  • The County Board approved the Sheriff's Office 2024 budget, which includes increased funding for salaries, benefits, vehicles, and uniforms. The department also plans to continue replacing approximately four patrol vehicles each year.

  • Officials approved the purchase of new jail safety equipment, including fire protection gear, portable radios, restraint equipment, technology upgrades, and emergency notification devices. The approximately $20,500 project will be funded through the Jail Assessment Fund, pending final approval.

  • The Board approved replacing the ballistic windshield on the Sheriff's Office MRAP vehicle to maintain officer safety during high-risk operations. The $13,454 project will be paid for using Asset Forfeiture funds.

  • The Sheriff thanked staff for their work on the 2024 budget and reported that recruitment and hiring efforts are ongoing. A new Jail Lieutenant has been hired, staffing is currently stable, and the department continues working to fill vacancies as they arise.

2024

Highlights

  • Law Enforcement Staffing: The Sheriff's Office continues to face staffing shortages and is actively recruiting new deputies.

  • Equipment Purchases Approved: The committee approved the purchase of:

    • Three body cameras

    • Nine in-car camera systems

    • Additional equipment including AEDs, Narcan kits, and Taser devices

  • Facility Improvements: Committee members discussed future expansion needs for the Sheriff's Office and the importance of improving workspace and storage.

  • Grant Funding Awarded: Pierce County accepted a $42,390 Wisconsin DOJ Drug Trafficking Grant, which will support Sheriff's Office operations and equipment.

  • Recent Rescue Highlight: Deputies recently rescued and stabilized a motorcyclist following a serious crash until EMS arrived. The victim is recovering, and no further action was required.

2025

Highlights

  • Personnel Requests: The Sheriff's Office requested funding in the 2025 budget for four additional patrol deputies and one Office Manager position. The committee discussed the need for additional staffing but took no action due to budget concerns.

  • Position Reclassifications: A proposal to reclassify existing Office Specialist positions into an Office Manager and Administrative Assistant was reviewed. The committee requested updated job descriptions and additional clarification before moving forward. No action was taken.

  • New Staff Introductions: Sheriff Koranda introduced several new members of the Sheriff's Office team, including patrol deputies, corrections officers, and support staff.

  • Surplus Equipment Sale Approved: The committee unanimously approved selling three surplus Motorola XTL series radios to the Town of Rock Elm for $1,000 after they were no longer needed by the Sheriff's Office.

  • Volunteer Patrol Program: The committee reviewed the Sheriff's Office Volunteer Patrol Program. Volunteers assist with traffic control, community events, vacation house checks, and other non-enforcement duties. The program continues to support deputies by handling non-emergency community services.

2026

Highlights

  • An HD camera upgrade for the jail.

  • Training equipment for deputies.

  • Replacement of outdated safety and communications equipment.

  • One new deputy position to help meet staffing needs.

  • The Sheriff's Office is transitioning to a new countywide Records Management System (RMS), allowing law enforcement agencies to share information more efficiently. The system is expected to improve operations while reducing long-term costs.

  • The Sheriff's Office expects to fully staff the jail after current recruits complete training.

  • The department is awaiting a $36,000 Wisconsin DOJ grant to replace aging equipment, including body armor, gas masks, and other safety gear.

  • Recent jail inspections were completed with positive results, reflecting the department's continued focus on maintaining a safe and effective facility.
